The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis has one of the largest collections of mosaics in the world, it was created by 20 different artists, covers 83,000 square feet and took 75 years to complete. The mosaics contain 41.5 million pieces of glass tessare in more than 7,000 colors. The installation began in 1912 was completed in 1988 by the Ravenna Mosaic Co. In recognition of its beauty and historical significance of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Pope John Paul II designated the Cathedral of St. Louis a Basilica in 1997. (the Old Cathedral of St. Louis was designated a Basilica in 1961).
The cathedral has a mosaic museum in its lower level giving the history and installation information about the extensive mosaics.
The beauty, detailing and expanse of the mosaics in the Cathedral can not be captured in photos and must be experienced in person. Link below is an online tour of the mosaics.
Specific visit requirements: The Cathedral is open every day from 7:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Offer tours daily between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, please contact the tour office at 314-373-8240 for tour reservations. Cathedral encourages everyone to come and visit the cathedral to experience the beauty of the mosaics, but can only guarantee tours to people who have reservations.
