This vertical lift bridge is new. The span was just recently (June 2008) opened for rail traffic. Amtrak trains between New York City and Boston run on these tracks.

The bridge currently serves up to 36 passenger trains and two freight trains everyday and the number of passengers crossing the heavily traveled bridge has increased from 1.4 million in 2000 to 2.2 million in 2007. The draw span of the bridge typically opens for marine traffic more than 1,600 times each year.
