The city of Nashua, New Hampshire, installed the first triangular manhole cover in 1919, but has been phasing them out in recent years. This example is on Canal street just before the bridge over the Merrimack river entering Hudson.

The origin and reasons for the Nashua triangular manhole covers are varied, some involving principles of geomety and some as simple as preventing theft. One thing is certain - they don't rattle! And, they seem to be unique to Nashua, one of New Hampshire's largest cities.
