Having opened on October 30, 1954, the Santa Clara bridge is the oldest of the 3 bridges over the Mondego in the city of Coimbra.
Near the right bank edge of the bridge is the Astoria hotel, an architecture landmark, and famous for the visit, in 1958, of the anti-fascist candidate to the presidency, Humberto Delgado.
At walking distance from the left bank edge are located the theme park Portugal dos Pequenitos and the ruins of the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha.
