West Blatchington Windmill is in the suberbs of Brighton and Hove in east Sussex.
It was built circa 1820 on a tall flint and brick tower and was adjoined to barns on the north, south and west side.
It is a "Smock Mill" [as the resemblance in silhouette is like the garment worn by millers of that period].
Smock mills are normally eight sided but West Batchington is unique in that it has only six.
Milling stopped in 1897.
Folowing road construction in the area in th 1930s the mill was left isolated on an island.
In 1979 it was opened to the public after extensive restoration by the local council and volunteers.
Opening times are 2:30pm to 5:00pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays from May to September inclusive.
