In 1959 two ex-convicts on parole from the Kansas State Penitentiary, Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, murdered Herb Clutter, a wealthy farmer in Holcomb, Kansas, his wife, and two children. They were captured six weeks later in Las Vegas. They were tried and convicted of the crime and sent to death row. After many appeals, they were executed on April 14, 1965. The story is told in Truman Capote's masterpiece "In Cold Blood" which is considered by many to be the originator of the true crime novel. The Clutter family is buried in Valley View Cemetery in nearby Garden City.
