When the railway viaduct and the station opened in 1857 it was greeted as a major achievement because it was built across boggy Flass Vale. Originally the viaduct was not part of the East Coast mainline until 1871. In 1987 the Durham viaduct was cleaned to remove more than a century's grim emanating from the city's many coal fires. It was strengthened and waterproofed at the same time. Overhead masts were erected in order that electrification of the London to Edinburgh railway line could be completed.
