The George Inn was built around 1542 as the George and Dragon. The current building was built after a devistating fire in 1676.
William Shakespeare was a visitor to The George Inn since the Globe Theatre was only a short distance away. Charles Dickens was also known to visit the George and even referred to it in
Little Dorrit.

It is known that the George Inn existed in the late 16th Century although the present building dates from 1677. Both Shakespeare and Dickens knew the hospitality of the inn which ahs continued right up to the present day.
The Inn is now owned by The National Trust.
The George Inn is a full service restaurant and pub. We were fortunate enough with the weather to be able to sit outside and enjoy our lunch and sip our beer. Dogs are allowed only in the courtyard and only if they are on a leash.
