The Seattle Buddhist Temple, or Seattle Betsuin (official name on the building is Seattle Buddhist Church) is in the Jodo Shinshu tradition, and began in Seattle in 1901. The current temple complex--which includes the main building, statue of the founder of Jodo Shinshu, Shinran Shonin, a large bell ("Bonsho"), walking meditation path, columbarium ("nokotsu-do"), and auditorium--was dedicated in 1941 (with delays in service during the Japanese internments until returning in 1946). It gained Betsuin status from the mother temple in Kyoto, Japan, in 1954.
The Seattle Buddhist Temple hosts weekly Sunday services, annual Bon Odori festival, educational and cultural outreach and activities, and various sports. The temple is included as part of the China town historic district, listed in the national register of historic places.
