In honor of Manchester Connecticut's sesquicentennial (150 year) anniversary, in 1973, the town placed blue plaques on all the historic places.

Records indicate that the early American Industrialist Aaron Buckland already had a woolen mill in operation at the site ca 1780, making it the oldest woolen factory in the country.
The wool for George Washington's suit, that he wore in his inauguration, was from this factory. Business grew through the 1920's but the great depression shut down the mills.
Late in the 1940's, the mills were sold to the Bezzini Brothers for their company Old Colony Furniture. Today there are a few tenants running various business ventures.
The Hilliard Mills are on the Unites States list of historic places.
