Just after leaving from Westover Air Force Base on a night training mission the B-24J crashed into the nearby Mt. Holyoke. It was believed to be a result of judgement error. All 10 servicemen aboard were killed.

The memorial is located within Skinner State Park and can be reached by hiking or driving. The site is not far from the Summit House and parking area.
