This cemetery was dedicated November 19, 1863, only 4 1/2 months after the battle of Gettysburg. On May 1, 1872 it was transferred to the war department and became a National Cemetery. It is now administered by the National Park Service as part of the Gettysburg National Military Park. There are over 6,000 interments here of soldiers that served in wars from the Mexican-American war to the present. (information from Wikipedia.com)
