The church at Staindrop dates from 771AD therefore the churchyard is very ancient. To the left of the south porch is a single gravestone to Nathaniel Gardner who was cook to George III. Opposite is a chest tomb in memory of Simon Gilpin who was the first vicar of the church after the restoration in 1660. In the north side of the churchyard is the grave of the Hon.Mrs Raby Vane. She decided to be buried here to bring respectability to an area of the churchyard where burial was considered to be an ill omen. The churchyard has been extended and this area is sited on the other side of the main road.
