A sandstone cliff, known as the Alum Spring Rock and found in Alum Spring Park, is 400 feet long and 40 feet high. In prehistoric times, waters flowing from the western mountains toward the newly-formed Atlantic Ocean carried tons of sediment which formed present-day sandstone.
At one end of the cliff is the Alum Spring. Alum is a group of hydrated double salts, usually consisting of aluminum sulfate, and the sulfate of another metal. Many people used to believed that alum spring water had medicinal powers. In the 1700's, the water flow was much greater than the seepage at present.
Alum Spring Park is open year round;
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. November 1 through March 31
10 a.m. to 8 p.m. April 1 through October 31.
