An Orlando teenager was killed this evening when his bicycle was struck by a car, authorities said.

Luis R. Rivera-Ortega, 17, was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk of Forsyth Rd. near Amethyst Lane, at 6:45 p.m. when he was hit by a Dodge sedan driven by Robert L. Roedell, 22, of Orlando.

Witnesses said that a vehicle pulled in front of Roedell and that he swerved to avoid it, skidding in front of oncoming traffic, before he struck Roedell, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Kim Miller said.

Rivera Ortega was pronounced dead at the scene. Miller said that charges against Roedell are pending.
