The second oldest lighthouse in Scotland is surrounded by water at high tide. Built in 1749 by Dumfries Town Council to guide ships up the River Nith estuary. It originally was just an unlit white square tower. It was heightened in 1795 and a light was added for the first time. The lighthouse was raised for a second time in 1843-44 taking on its current distinctive shape. It was inactive from 1867 to 1894. The light was extinguished in the mid-1930s and the lighthouse is now disused, but is open to the public at times for a nominal fee.

No light, no lens. About 30 metre high. Built on a natural outcrop of rock.
