Cholera! The very echo of the word struck fear into the heart of nineteenth century society. In 1849, Barnard Castle was an industrial centre, with workers housed in cramped, dirty tenaments near the factories and this ultimately lead to the outbreak of cholera. The disease ravaged the town and the towns people raised this memorial to remember the poor people who died and ended up in a common grave.
