The Manunka Chunk tunnel is a twin set of tunnels approximately 800 feet long. One side has suffered ceiling collapses, but both tunnels are passable.
The tunnels were built in the 1850's. The Lackawanna rail line (which included the Paulinskill Viaduct and the Bryam Ice Tunnel) opened in 1910. It was shorter then this line and had fewer steep grades, and made this line unnecessary.
The tunnel cut cross a small creek, which was diverted by a wooden tube. This tube frequently leaked, one of many troubles with this tunnel. Now in its abandoned state, it makes the tunnel flood and there's typically several inches of water in it. You can not go through these tunnels without getting your feet incredibly muddy. Bring a change of socks & shoes if you have any sense about you.
