The Dwarf Planet Makemake is the second largest known Kuiper Belt object and the third-largest known dwarf planet in the Solar System. In July 2008, it was formally classified as Plutoid; the third Dwarf Planet to receive this classification after Pluto and Eris. The three Plutoids and Asteroid Ceres are currently the only designated dwarf planets.

Makemake was discovered on March 31, 2005. Its diameter is roughly three-quarters that of Pluto and the extremely low surface temperature of -406 F suggests that its surface is covered with methane and ethane ice.

The object was discovered shortly after Easter 2005 and the discovery team first used the codename "Easterbunny." Remaining connected to Easter but keeping with the tradition of naming planets and dwarf planets after religious figures, it was finally named Makemake after the creator of humanity in the mythos of the Rapanui, the native people of Easter Island.
