This arch was erected as a memorial to the soldiers of the Virginia Peninsula who died serving their country. This stone arch replaced the original 1919 wood and plaster arch in 1962.

This arch was erected as a memorial to the soldiers of the Virginia Peninsula who died serving their country. This stone arch replaced the original 1919 wood and plaster arch in 1962.

The text across the top of the arch reads, "Greetings with love to those who return, a triumph with tears to those who sleep."

The arch stands at the famous Hampton Roads which served as a port of embarkation in the Spanish-American War and the two World Wars.
