THE PLANET: Until the 1960s, the planet Venus was considered a "twin sister" to the Earth because Venus is the nearest planet to us, and because the two planets seem to share many characteristics. In the past 30 years, however, we have learned a great deal more about our "sister" planet, and we now know that almost nothing on Venus is like that of the Earth. Much of this misconception can be traced to the difficulty of observing Venus through the thick cloud layer. In the past 30 years, astronomers have learned how to peer through that cloud layer, and unlock many of the secrets of this nearby planet. The planet is so named because it is the brightest of the planets known since ancient times. With only a few exceptions, the features discovered on Venus are named after female figures. On June 8 2004, Venus passed directly between the Earth and the Sun, appearing as a large dark dot traveling across the Sun. This event is known as the "transit of Venus" and is extremely rare. It was 122 years since the last time this occurred, with The next event in 2012, Then not again until 2117.

THE ROMAN GODDESS: Venus was the Roman goddess of love and beauty, however, she was originally the goddess and patroness of gardens, vineyards and vegetation. Later, under Greek influence, she was compared with Aphrodite and assumed many of Aphrodite's aspects. Roman portraits and statues of Venus are usually identical to the Greek representation of Aphrodite.
