Captain Thomas Knowlton - Hartford, CT - U.S. Revolutionary War Memorials on Waymarking.com

Commanded nearly 200 men at the battle of Bunker Hill, providing cover for the retreating Patriots. Killed in front of his men, by Highlander Black Watch, at the battle of Harlem Heights (New York), on September 16, 1776.

His unit was called the "Rangers", or "Knowlton's Rangers" and were the first US Army intelligence gathering unit.

At 15 years of age he fought in the French and Indian War. He joined his brother, Daniel, on scouting missions into enemy territory. He served during six campaigns in the war and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1760.

In 1762, he fought for the British, in Havana Cuba, in the British expedition against Cuba, also known as the Seven Years' War.

This statue has stood here, near the Connecticut State Capital building, since November 13, 1895
