1,979 feet is not very high, but it is quite a trip. Only about 14 miles from L'Anse, it takes 28 miles of logging roads to get there.

Mount Curwood, which is nearby, was thought to be the highest point, but in 1982, modern surveying equipment found that Mount Arvon is approximately 11 inches higher.
Mount Arvon is located on land owned by a paper company (MeadWestvaco as of this writing) and the road is somewhat maintained by the county, but drive it at your own risk. The route and driving recommendations are available at the Baraga County Convention and Visitor Bureau in L'Anse (

The route is well marked with diamond shaped "Mount Arvon" signs. I was able to get to the top in my 2WD, but the recommendation is to stop and park where the signs turn ORANGE.
