The Baroque-style building also houses the town's magistrates courts. It was opened in 1902 following the demolition of the previous town hall after worries over the foundations. The building has over 90 rooms and its impressive tower dominates Colchester High Street. On top of the 162ft tower is a statue of the Virgin Mary. The building also features a 15ft stained glass window of St Helena, the saint that many mistakenly believe is the statue on the tower.
