Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, or simply Michelangelo, was one of the greatest inventors, artists, and theorists of the Italian Renaissance, or perhaps of all time. He was truly a Renaissance man, being an accomplished sculptor, painter and inventor. Two of his best-known sculptures, the Pietà and the David (housed in Florence) were created before he turned thirty. He also painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome and was the original architect of St. Peter's Basilica.
