Finished in December of 1928, the Majestic Theatre is said to be one of the oldest continually running theatres in Australia. Some websites do say that it is the oldest (including wikipedia). But it seems that there is a "Majestic Theatre" in Pomona that was licensed to show movies in 1923, so there may be some confusion between the two. Regardless, Malanda's Majestic Theatre is the first theatre in the Tablelands/Northern Qld.
The theatre was built and owned by Paddy English, who's father built the Malanda Hotel, which is the largest all-wood building in the Southern Hemisphere. The Majestic Theatre is completely built from hardwoods selected from the Atherton Tableland rainforests. The theatre has sack potato seating (I'm not sure what that means, is that a style, or is the fabric of the seats made out of potato sacks?).
The link below, for the theatre website, tells the interesting history behind the theatre.
