Called "High Bridge" in an old hand-colored postcard I found. The same picture (monochrome) can be seen here. In that old (undated) picture, you can get a sense of how much engineering went into the project and how much of the river bed was artificially narrowed to build the bridge. That's also a comment on how the railroad barons did pretty much whatever they wanted back then: they probably wouldn't get away with that kind of environmental alteration today.

Spans Barton River about 1.5 miles north of Barton village, adjacent to Route 5.

I parked in a wide spot on the other side of Route 5 and crossed over to get the pictures from the road bridge (this is where the coordinates were taken), but it was an "iffy" thing to do, as the bridge and road do not really accommodate pedestrians. You could get much closer on the property of the adjacent Pine Crest Motel & Cabins (guests can swim in the river, and the fishing is great). Walking along the tracks was not feasible. The close picture is one I had in my files, taken a couple of years ago.

Length of bridge: Opening, about 20 feet.

Height of bridge: Stonework, about 30 feet. Railbed maybe 50.

What type of traffic does this bridge support?: Railroad

What kind of gap does this bridge cross?:
River

Is the bridge still in service for its original purpose?: Yes (tracks further down the line appear to have been recently used)
