[FR] L'abbé Angot dit de la fondation de cette deuxième église à Laval (après celle de la Trinité et celle de Saint Melaine) que Guy XV de Laval offre en 1484 aux notables de la paroisse à part de sa protection et indemnités féodales une relique remarquable, à savoir le chef de Saint Vénérand, de son église d'Acquigny.
En 1499, l'église de Saint-Vénérand s'achevait peu à peu. Les gros marchands du Pont-de-Maine qu'enrichissait le commerce avec l'Espagne rivalisaient de zèle pour orner leur nouvelle église paroissiale d'autels, de chapelles, de vitraux.
[EN] The first stone of this church dedicated to Saint Venerand was lad by Guy XV, count of Laval, in 1485.
Built at the request of inhabitants of the suburb situated on the road to Paris, it was then consecrated by Jean Tissot, bishop of Le Mans.
The original building was dominated by a spire finished in 1500 by the carpenter, Jean Bodin. The building was then extended by various building projects up until 1705. Thus the nave was extended and given a monumental gate in the flamboyante gothic style. Its upper part was then crowned by a triumphal arch, surmounted by a triangular pediment and the choir received sculpted polygonal caisson arches. The Church of Saint Venerand is significant as the most important example of Renaissance art in Laval.
The building whose fittings are of a greatly diverse nature also contain the relics of St. Venerand, a IVth century deacon, exceptional XVIth century windows and altar screens from the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries.
