Every 4th of July the Village of Prospect Ohio goes all out to put together some great festivities. Even though the town is small (only about 1,500 people), thousands come from all around to eat, visit with friends, and watch fireworks.
The festivities start at noon at the Prospect Community Park every 4th of July. During the day there are games, rides for the kids, live entertainment, and best of all food. The local volunteer fire department comes out to make bbq chicken over an open pit. It's really a sight to see in its own right. Their pit is about 40 feet long by about 6 feet wide, and it's filled with chicken throughout the day. Entrance is free, but dinner will cost you. This year it was $5.00 for a 1/2 chicken and a roll. The other big food attraction are the funnel cakes. Make sure to get there early because near time for the fireworks to start there is usually a line several hundred people deep.
The fireworks are also set off by the fire department. There is plenty of open seating on the three nearby baseball fields, as well as anywhere else one can find a spot. Parking is usually tricky unless one arrives early. The streets fill up, and often people have to walk clear across town to find parking. The town is only about 1 square mile, so it's not that bad really. Fireworks are usually set off at around 10pm, or whenever they decide to start them. They aren't choreographed to music, or anything fancy, like in the big cities. It's still a great show, and a nice way to spend the afternoon and evening with friends and family. The small, rural town feel is part of what makes it special, and continues to bring people from all around...even if there might be "bigger" displays nearby.
