The entrance sign states:
The Linnean Society, founded in 1788, is named after the great Swedish naturalist, Carl Linneaus (1707-78). The Society promotes the study of all aspects of the biological sciences, with particular emphasis on evolution, taxonomy, biodiversity, and sustainability. It encourages and communicates scientific advances in these and associated fields through its publications, meetings and website. The Society maintains historically important scientific collections and a speciallist library, which provide key resources for research in taxonomy and evolutionary biology.
From the Linnean Society of London's website:
The Linnaean Collections comprise the specimens of plants (14,300), fish (158), shells (1,564) and insects (3,198) acquired from the widow of Carl Linnaeus in 1784 by Sir James Edward Smith, founder and first President of the Linnean Society. They also include the library of Linnaeus (of some 1,600 volumes) and his letters (c. 3,000 items of correspondence and manuscripts). All are housed in a temperature and humidity controlled strongroom in the Linnean Society.
The Linnean Society of London is located in Burlington House with other nobel organizations such as the Royal Academy of Arts and the Geological Society of London.
These are their main offices and are not available for tours. If you wish to view a specific document in their library, you will need to pre-arrange an appointment.
The Linnean Society of London hosts many events and seminars through out London as well as conducting touring exhibits throughout the rest of the world. If you cannot attend any of their events, you can always explore one of their on-line exhibits including the original Linnean Herbarium.
