In Ohura peace and quiet isn't a luxury, it is a way of life.

Ohura was once a bustling little town famous for coal mining. It had a high school, farming stores, markets - even a picture theatre.

The small town, about 60 kilometres east of Taumaranui, faces an uncertain future. The population dropped 40% between 1996 and 2001.

There is little work available in a place that once thrived. When the coal mining ceased in the 1960s the people left. The bank closed 19 years ago, the post office 17 years ago and while there was once three petrol stations there are now none.

Ohura is located 10km off the Forgotten World Highway and its excellent museum gives an insight into its pioneering history and days as a thriving coal mining town. If the museum is closed, directions for obtaining the key are on the door.
