Kirkbean churchyard has many ornate and impressive large tombs. Most famous grave is John Paul, father of John Paul Jones, the 'Founder of US navy'.

The churchyard of Kirkbean has had pre 1855 monumental inscriptions transcribed and indexed. Originally a Free Church of Scotland, the records are now kept at church's General Register Office in Edinburgh. Records only exist from 1714. (visit link)

Older headstones are either red sandstone or a grey granite, some with iron railings. Still in use and well maintained.

Sample Headstone reads.
"Erected in memory of Walter Hewitson who died at Kirkhouse 8th December 1862 Aged 67 years"
