I had a bit of a time deciding what location and image would represent Vermont for this song.
Should I use Taylor Park in St. Albans? I was a DJ at WWSR-FM there when the song was popular, so it is a really strong memory of the time for me.
Nah, a cityscape doesn't really convey the feel of the song.
I decided on the floating bridge in Brookfield: the town is much more rural than St. Albans and more central in the state, and the bridge is unique in its own right (a great waymark, and I couldn't figure out where else to post it), so it all works out. And yes, it's in the hills.
The "gentle folk" were probably hippie types who were flocking to the state back then, not the Woodchucks who would have lived here all their lives. That's not to say the natives weren't good people, just not what I imagine Winchester's Yankee Lady to have been: Nicolette Larson in her coveralls.
Musician: Jesse Winchester
Name of Song: Yankee Lady
Relevant Verse: "I lived with the gentle folk in the hills of old Vermont
Where what you do all day depends on what you want."
