B E Fogelberg's bronze statue of the man regarded as the founder of Stockholm stands on Riddarholmen. Birger Magnusson (Birger Jarl) (c. 1210 – 21 October 1266) had seized power in the Sweden of those days, and his sons were to be crowned as kings. It is in a letter between Birger and his son Valdemar that Stockholm is mentioned for the first time, in 1252. This is therefore counted as the year the city was founded, and the 750th anniversary was celebrated not so long ago. Several historical structures are still named after him — including the street Birger Jarlsgatan (on Norrmalm); the tower Birger Jarls Torn and the square Birger Jarls Torg (both on Riddarholmen).
