Louis Jean Desprez, the greatest architect and scenographer of his time, designed the 22-meter granite obelisk standing in front of the royal palace. It was commissioned by Gustav III as a way of demonstrating his gratitude to Stockholm’s burghers for their guard duty during the Russian War 1788-1790.
A true obelisk is a stone pillar or monolith carved in one piece and ending in a pyramid-like point called a pyramidion. This one, however, consist of several stone blocks.
