In the year 1895 a cornerstone was placed for a new structure. Over the next 5 years the structure grew at an “on again – off again” rate as designers and construction contractors failed and went out of business during an economic depression. Others were hired and the work continued. Filigree was removed from the design and other design changes were made. What emerged was a Tudor-Gothic Castle. Within were rooms containing a Chapel, library, auditorium, museum, classrooms, and offices. The first classes started September 22, 1899. Later nicknamed “Old Main”, this was the first building constructed for what is now known as Eastern Illinois University. Side wings have been added since the first building was constructed. It stills plays a central part of the University.
