This cross is made of concrete and is laid down at a low angle, making it hard to see from the road that passes by, however, it is quite visible from above. It is even visible from the satellite image as well.
This church was founded in 1813 by a group of local African Americans and European Americans. Together they built this church from donated lumber, labor, grain and money around 1830. During the days of the Underground Railroad, this was a well known spot for slaves to hide out while waiting for the opportunity to escape to Canada. This site has also been recognized by the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in the year 2001.
This cross is not nearly as old as the church is, being constructed in the 20th century.
