The church may well have been built in the last Norman period. An early West tower, nave with North & South aisles, South porch, North & South transepts, chancel with narrower North & South chapels, sanctuary & vestry make up the cruciform design.
The font, nave & sanctuary speak of the 12th Century, the tower, narrow aisles & probably the transepts were added about the 13th, the Chancel chapels & spire are 15th century.
The font is one of three in Devon, of great antiquity & much interest. Its design is certainly Norman. The bowl & stem are of red sandstone & the base a grey stone. The cup-shaped bowl is surrounded by shallow flutings.
It seems fairly certain that there were walls on each side of the nave before the addition of the aisles in the 13th century. The arcades are of three bays each with pointed arches. The East bay is virtually a three quarter arch without trace of a point & seems to owe this irregularity to a widening of the Transepts when the chancel chapels were added.
The tower is of the 13th century & the rather large West window as probably inserted in the late 14th century. There are five bells which three were cast in 1763. One inscribed 'God preserve the church', another 'God save the King' & the third has three gold coin impressions, a George 11 guinea & both sides of a John V Portuguese coin dated 1743.
