The library at Götaplatsen was built in 1967 but the history of libraries in Göteborg takes us back more than a century earlier.
The first library was founded in 1861 in an apartment in the Haga district of the town. The siting of the library in that particular location was no accident: James Dickson - a prominent industrial magnate - started the library for the benefit of the working classes, and for those who earn their living by the sweat of their brow. And, in consequence, no charges should on any account be levied. The library soon outgrew its premises and in 1897 it moved to a new building on Södra Allégatan. This was the first specific library building in the whole of Scandinavia. More than sixty years later the Dicksonska library also became too cramped, and the Göteborg public library moved into newly-built premises on Götaplatsen, a prime city location.
The library is open 10 am to 8 pm Monday to Friday and 11 am to 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
