Tacoma's YWCA, founded in 1905, still operates out of their 1928 building. During WWII the loft of the building became a dormitory for women who had moved to the city to enter the workforce during the war. In 1976 the YWCA opened the state's first shelter for battered women. It was the largest shelter in western states at the time. And in 1981 the Washington State Domestic Violence Hotline began in an upstairs office of the YWCA.

To learn more about the Tacoma YWCA's projects and history over the last 100 years be sure to link to their history page. YWCA stands for "Young Women's Christian Association" and the organization has groups around the world. According to the International YWCA Website it is the oldest and one of the largest women’s organization in the world.

Tacoma's YWCA rents out the large room in the building for conferences or banquets to raise money for the group. It has a great view of Commencement Bay.
