Atsion Village was a successful bog iron producing town, but after the high demand for this grade of New Jersey ore, Samuel Richards had a paper mill erected on company grounds on this site in 1852. The original building was two stories and 60 long by 50 foot wide.
By 1854, the paper mill had become a complete financial loss. In May 1871, Maurice Raleigh purcahsed the property and enlarged the paper mill and converted it to a cotton mill. 500 pounds of yarn a week was produced by 170 workers at this mill.
The cotton mill closed shortly after Raleigh's death in January 1882.
In 1892, Joseph Wharton had purchased much of the surrounding area. His plan was to flood the pines and sell off the water to Philadelphia. New Jersey legislature would not let this happen, so Wharton turned his focus to the cranberry business that was sprouting here. Wharton converted the mill to a cranberry sorting and packing plant, as it remained unitl the 1940s.
In 1977, arsonists burnt this historic building to the ground.
