The convent was built in 1619 by Carmelites. When the royal family arrived, the convent was taken over for use by Maria I of Portugal. In 1810, the royal library was installed in the convent's basement. In 1906 the convent got and face lift. It's currently used by the Universidade Cândido Mendes as a museum.
