The monument was given to Brazil by the United State to commemerate the 100 year anniversary of Brazil's emancipation. The medallion of Washington is next to a medallion of Brazilian Politican Jose Bonifacio. At the bottom of the monuement was written: "‘Amizade do povo americano ao povo brasileiro- 07/09/1822- 07/08/1922" (Friendship to the Brazilian people from the American people)
