The marker text states:

Approximately 1¼ miles east of this site is the historic Johnson's Crossing. This was the first settlement reached west of the Sierra and the last stop on the Overland Emigrant Trail. Used as a camping spot for the pioneers, departure spot for miners and a sojourning place for trappers, herdsmen, and adventurers. The rescue party for the Donner Party was organized and departed from this crossing February 5, 1847.

Historical Significance:
In 1849 alone, the Overland Emigrant Trail delivered more than 30,000 people to the California territory, depositing most at Johnson's Ranch.

Why?:
Bands of fur trappers, trinket traders, mountaineers and adventurers pushed into the unexplored western wilderness. Many were headed to the gold mines to try to make their fortunes.


Directions:
From Highway 65 in Wheatland, drive NE on 3rd St., turn right on Olive St. which turns into Spenceville Road - continue about 3 1/2 miles, the marker is on the right.
