This is apparently Berkeley's oldest currently operating Brewery, and one of the oldest Pubs in Berkeley. It serves a nice assortment of beers and traditional pub food in an old-timey looking setting in the heart of downtown Berkeley.

Established in 1985, the founders had quite a bit of work to do to convince Berkeley city officials to allow a "factory" and a "brewery" in downtown Berkeley. The city had a ancient tradition of banning the sale of alcohol within a mile of the U.C. Campus, in order to protect the easily corrupted students as well as a long-standing tradition of sticky beauracracy. However, the establishment has proved to be a mainstay of downtown evening life, and offers patrons a lovely assortment of beer--from ales to porters--as well as hearty food. The founders have gone on to establish a number of brewpubs in the area.
Indoor seating is cozy with old-fashioned wooden booths and tables as well as a cheerful bar. They also have a small outdoor terrace on the roof, which on the occasional warm Berkeley night, is quite pleasant.
