This churchyard is set around the ancient church of St Sampson. The church dates from 1333 or earlier. Until 1438 the dead of Callington, about 3 miles away, had to be brought to St Sampson's for burial. Before that date Callington did not have any consecrated ground in which to bury their dead. During 2005 work was under taken to improve drainage around the church. A trench was excavated around the entire perimeter of the church wall in addition to a number of trial pits and the repointing of stone footings seen projecting from the exterior wall of the church, particularly at its eastern end. Several graves were investigated and dated to around the 11th century. This churchyard is old in deed.
