The college was originally founded as a training centre for Alaska natives and named the Sitka Industrial & Training School. It was re-named in honour of Rev. Sheldon Jackson, a missionary and teacher, in 1910.
The school is on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a National Historic Landmark.
