James Buchanan was born in 1791 in a small complex of cabins known as Stony Batter, just NW of Cove Gap in what is now the SW portion of Franklin County. The cabin he was born in has been moved several times, and is currently located in Mercersburg - 4 miles to the SE.

The land nearby was acquired in the early 1900's and is now a state park.
