The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Creed: The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe.

What is a Substance-Free Living Environment?
Substance-free housing is an effort to remove the emphasis on alcohol in the everyday lives and activities of fraternity members in their home environments. If a chapter is substance-free, alcohol will not be present at any time in the fraternity chapter house. There will still be social functions at which alcohol is present. Such functions will be hosted at appropriate third-party locations (restaurants, hotel banquet rooms) where a licensed, insured third-party vendor is responsible for monitoring the distribution of alcohol in a legal and appropriate manner. All social events are required to have security guards present. In addition, many of these functions will include arrangements for safe transportation of members and guests, non-alcoholic beverages, and other measures to ensure the safest event possible.
