When I knew I would be visiting Hanoi, seeing the mausoleum and passing in review of the body of Ho Chi Minh was at the top of my list for must do things. And I was not disappointed. The former leader, dead since 1969 lies in repose in a glass coffin surrounded by uniformed honor guards who take their job quite seriously. Security checks are strict (they even made me leave my GPSr on the bus since they thought it might have a camera). There is no talking inside the mausoleum, dress codes are enforced, and utmost respect is the rule. It is apparent here the high regard held for the man who reunified Vietnam. The mausoleum building itself is a massive, dominating building in the city and the nearby sites are worth spending time to visit for a real picture of the leader.
